| 1. | Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)– The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills was created in June 2009 from the merger of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. | 2. | Research Councils – There are eight research councils in the UK that are the main investors in research. The Research councils work with the Office of Science and Technology to support the academic researchers. | 3. | Research Excellence Data or RED Directory – The Research Excellence Directory provides detailed information on 20 HESE universities and 3 public sector research organisations and aims to stimulate businesses to engage with the regions research base. The RED Directory offers access to businesses on the latest research and knowledge to enable businesses to develop and grow. In addition the Research Excellence Directory also provides a list of the Public Sector Research Establishments (PSRE) and Universities in the South East of England that offer research excellence. | 4. | The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) assesses the quality of research in universities and colleges in the UK. The main purpose of the RAE is to enable the higher education funding bodies to distribute public funds for research selectively on the basis of quality. Institutions conducting the best research receive a larger proportion of the available grant so that the infrastructure for the top level of research in the UK is protected and developed.
